From today, 3 August 2026, AI training becomes an enforceable duty. The EU AI Act has asked organisations to make their people AI literate since February 2025. Nobody was enforcing it, so plenty of good businesses missed it. This week, national authorities start.
This is not only an EU story. The Act follows the output, not the office. If your customers, your staff, or your AI outputs touch the EU, you are in scope, wherever you are registered. A Manchester agency screening candidates in Dublin counts. So does a consultancy with one Berlin-based contractor.
The wider impact matters just as much. The EU has set the benchmark everyone else is measuring against. Enterprise clients are already asking suppliers what AI training they run. Insurers and procurement teams are starting too. UK regulation is heading the same way. Even with no EU exposure at all, this is fast becoming what your customers expect.
The good news: this is a best-efforts duty, not a perfection one. No certificate is mandated. No AI Officer is required. What counts is what you did and can show.
So you can move a long way in an afternoon. List your AI tools. Note who uses what. Run one session that fits the roles people actually hold. Write it down: date, attendees, systems covered, risks discussed. That takes you from nothing to demonstrable effort, which is exactly what the rule asks for.
